Albuquerque’s 516 ARTS is hosting a book release party and print sale Friday, November 1 featuring the books and prints of two photography icons of New Mexico: David Scheinbaum and Janet Russek. These two internationally recognized artists each released photo books in 2013: Scheinbaum’s HIP HOP: Portraits of an Urban Hymn, and Russek’s The Tenuous Stem. Together they operate Scheinbaum & Russek LTD, private fine art photography dealers and consultants in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

In HIP HOP: Portraits of an Urban Hymn, Scheinbaum explores the breadth of hip-hop music’s cultural influence beyond urban centers and out into the world. The book includes portraits of Erykah Badu, Chuck D., George Clinton, Common, Mos Def, Del-Tha Funkee Homosapien, Sage Francis, Professor Griff, KRS One, Mike Relm, Tajai, Wu-Tang Clan and Yelawolf, among others. Rounding out the book are essays by Gaye Theresa Johnson and Michael Eric Dyson; an artist conversation with Frank H. Goodyear III; and an introduction by Brian Hardgroove of Public Enemy.

Janet Russek’s The Tenuous Stem includes still life images of ripe squashes, peaches and pears, alluding to the fullness of pregnancy, as well as floral still lifes, a series titled Beautiful Vulnerabilities featuring pregnant bellies, and Russek’s Memories series of iconic nostalgic objects such as corsets and shoe trees. The book includes an essay by art scholar and critic MaLin Wilson-Powell on Russek’s creative process.

Scheinbaum and Russek will offer original prints for sale at this event, with a portion of proceeds benefiting 516 ARTS. They will also sign a limited edition of 11″ x 17″ posters produced just for this event, with 100% of the proceeds to benefit 516 ARTS.

The event will include a live DJ and refreshments from Tractor Brewing.
