Self-Employment 101: Business Workshop for Creatives

Class Description: Plenty of artists, craftspeople and creatives of all kinds have awesome skills at making things or providing services like photography or interior design—but not a clue about how to turn those skills into a business. If you have a product or service you’d like to offer but don’t consider yourself a “businessperson,” you’re in good company.

This class, taught by Peri Pakroo, will offer practical, detailed information about how to develop your creative idea, product or service into a profitable business, with success defined on your own terms. Topics will include basic business concepts, business planning, how to structure your business, cost-effective marketing techniques, financial management basics and more.

This class will cover:

• Defining your vision for your creative business and for your self-employed life, including your definition of success, and the type and scale of business you want to start.
• Understanding what makes a profitable market, and developing and refining your business idea so that it targets one.
• Tackling start-up hurdles and the small business bureaucracy, including choosing and creating a legal business structure, getting tax identification numbers, obtaining any necessary licenses/permits.
• Business plan basics, including a basic template for a business plan and understanding basic financials.

Class is limited to 8 participants.
