For some people, some fantasies should remain fantasies. For others, I recommend living the fantasy out, but doing it safely and with wide open eyes and a wide open heart, knowing that we can never really know an experience until we know it.

I want to create art which reflects my anger and to protest Trump, but then I will not be making the positive art that I originally planned for this year. I don’t want this fascist to be the reason I do anything, but I also don’t want to ignore what is happening around me. Which direction I should take?

You no longer have to be with this person who has clearly been struggling with who they are. I would recommend that you explore, discover and decide who YOU are. You are not just a mom, a wife or an ex-wife.

Taking lessons from a good friend can be a wonderful thing or it can be frustrating. It all depends on the specific teacher and student. Does this person know how to TEACH? Or do they only know how to play the guitar?

How do I explain the disenfranchisement of elderly black grandmothers to a White suburbanite from Anytown USA?

I would see local bands or touring bands where two members were dating, or even just a duet consisting of a couple, and I would think about what that might be like to drive around the country, just me and my partner…driving, playing, loving, driving, eating, playing, fucking…maybe sleeping at some point.

We are so polarized, I’m afraid of what will happen if and when Donald Trump loses. So many of his supporters think that the election is rigged. What can the rest of us do about these misinformed, angry fools? Will this election even be “over” after it is over?

It’s gotten to the point that I don’t even want to have sex anymore. I try to avoid it because I do not want to get my hopes up again. He says it’s because when he was in the army he took steroids and then to stay hard he would take pills kinda like viagra.

I know it is hard because sometimes I want to hate Trump too, for acting like a human underwear stain, but even he had a mother. She deserves for us to not hate him. That is the only way we can make progress as a country and as a species.

So, Hopeful Writer, I hope I have not come off as too snarky. The truth is, there’s a lot to be said for being able to follow instructions even though we are artists, writers, musicians, etc., who are specifically drawn to creative work which is about NOT following the rules.

I really love my kids and my husband. But I need long stretches of focused time for my work, and lately I feel I can’t get that without guilt, and often crabbiness. Bobby, how can I be present with my family while also doing my creative work?

Use that part of your brain which destroys methods and rebels against how other people do things. Do whatever you want. Bang on it. Slap it. The important thing is that you FEEL it and you stop worrying about playing the damn thing.
