For the most part, I’ve had the good fortune of doing work that doesn’t compromise my beliefs. But a few years ago I wasn’t so lucky.

Iʼm pretty sure this is the freelancerʼs life. Unless youʼre truly gifted—I mean frighteningly, what-you-touch-turns-to-money gifted—youʼre probably throwing anything at the wall and praying it sticks.

The future looms large before us and it is our responsibility as artists to advocate for ourselves. We must advocate for our continued importance and relevance in such politically uncertain times. We must advocate for increased fusion of art and science, since an interdisciplinary understanding of the world has always been more thorough and enlightening.

There has been no shortage of wreckage at our feet from this past year and we’ll have to clean it up. There is no getting around that. But kindly, there is a rope ladder to ascend.

What would being a musician be worth in a post-apocalyptic world, if pre-apocalypse you made your living playing gigs or creating computer-based music as I do? Would you be able to survive playing guitar in this dark future?

So, Hopeful Writer, I hope I have not come off as too snarky. The truth is, there’s a lot to be said for being able to follow instructions even though we are artists, writers, musicians, etc., who are specifically drawn to creative work which is about NOT following the rules.

If you tell people you are working side jobs, does it give the impression that you are hurting for money, and/or willing to work for less than you’re worth?

How things have changed in four short years! So now, what do I do? Go back to waiting tables? Work in an office? Have a boss?!
